It is in its old Medina (Fes el Bali) that Fes concentrates most of its cultural treasures. This is a 200-hectare market area, surrounded by walls and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are several medersas, institutions where the Quran is studied. The Al Quaraouiyine Mosque, which houses one of the oldest universities in the world, is also found there. The old Medina also preserves the traditional craftsmanship of its artisans. Seffarine Square is the hub for coppersmiths and artisans who work with copper to create teapots, trays, and incense burners. The carpenters have made Nejjarine Square their own. The tanneries and leatherwork are one of the major crafts of the city of Fes.
Leather and its craftsmanship are very prominent in many neighborhoods of the old Medina of Fes. During your walks in the heart of Fes el Bali, you will encounter tanneries, donkeys carrying hides, as well as many shops selling leather goods and artisans making Moroccan slippers (babouches). After 2 or 3 days of visiting Fes, it becomes very clear that leatherwork is one of the major crafts of Fes.
The Chouara tannery is the largest tannery in the city of Fes and one of the oldest. Since the city's founding, the tanning industry has operated continuously in the same way as it did centuries ago. Today, the tanning industry in the city is considered one of the main tourist attractions. The tanneries are filled with round stone vats containing dye or white liquids used to soften the hides. The leather goods produced in the tanneries are exported all over the world.
